28 Jul Helping Families Buy Back Their Home
After attending Home Preservation Education (HPE), the Johnson family received a certificate of completion that allows them to buy back their home for $1,000 and expunge their over-due taxes!
In 2015, Detroit Land Bank Authority (DLBA) tapped Central Detroit Christian Community Development Corporation (CDC), along with other service agencies, to participate in a pilot program to help families buy back their homes lost to tax foreclosure. The DLBA Pilot Buy Back program requires participants to attend workshops and one-on-one counseling to meet certain educational and financial milestones in order to buy back their home. Over the past two years, CDC provided workshops and counseling to 32 families to help them meet those requirements. The counselors walked alongside these families to help develop a family budget, create an emergency fund, and understand how to care for and preserve a home over the long haul.
