CDC Tutoring...

" I think about tutoring everyday.  I love tutoring, it’s very important."  (First-grader in program)

"His teacher says she is seeing real improvement in his reading."  (Mother of student in program)

One of CDC's newest programs, Empower Educational Services, began in the fall of 2005 and is licensed by the State of Michigan as an approved provider of tutoring for children qualifying for supplemental education under the “No Child Left Behind” Act of 2001. Empower is presently tutoring 10 elementary school and 2 high school students on Monday and Tuesday afternoons.

Tutoring is offered in a dynamic fashion—computer-based learning in our state-of-the-art computer lab featuring 20 brand new Toshiba laptops. The computer-based curriculum, PLATO, provides pre-testing to determine a student’s academic level and then offers forth an individual education plan for each student that develops and enhances weak areas in their academics. As students achieve, comprehend and prove mastery, PLATO advances them to the next level.

Students are tutored through PLATO three hours a week and spend the remainder of their time with us hearing a Bible story and completing their homework. Twice a month our para-professional tutoring staff (all tutors must have at minimum 60 hours of college credit) meet with parents to provide progress reports and training on how to assist their children with their homework. A Certified teacher presides over the entire program to assure the State’s educational requirements are met.

In the end, it is our goal that students are empowered in their reading and math skills and parents are empowered to be a part of their child’s education.  At the end of the pioneer year of this program, incredible strides have been made academically.  For example, one first grader tested in at a mid-kindergarten level in both reading and math.  After five months of tutoring, he was working at a mid-second grade level.  It is exciting to see students accustomed to struggling through school get a taste of academic success and begin believing in their abilities!

Please pray that the students would continue to grow in character as they progress in academics.

Please pray that the students will learn perseverance, respect for others, and self-control.

Please pray that the "fruits of the Spirit" will grow in the lives of the students as they learn and have fun together.
