A Safe Place

Our Middle school club meets each week through the school year for a time of fun and learning in a safe environment. Activities and assist the youth in growing in an understanding of God and the world around them. Topics such as leadership, conflict resolution, and knowing and living the truth are all presented in a Biblical context. Relationships and mentoring are the focus of this program as we encourage young people to pursue Christ as they grow into adulthood.

Breakthrough Enrichment

As part of the Tuesday evening Breakthrough Enrichment Program, offers middle school students a hot meal and training in a variety of youth development classes. Both boys and girls participate in Cooking & Nutrition classes, girls participate in Fashion & Grace which teaches etiquette and Boys to Men which teaches boys how to become men.

These typically include dance, drama, art, fashion, sewing, financial literacy, entrepreneurship, recreation and conflict resolution. By offering these volunteer-taught classes, CDC gives students an opportunity to develop their natural talents and discover new interests. The classes also include a Bible lesson that enables students to grow in their understanding of God and the world He created as they learn about themselves in the class. Each semester, the students showcase their skills and abilities for classmates, families, friends, and community.

High School Club 7:37

Club 7:37 provides high school students with a safe, fun, and comfortable place to hang out, meet friends, and hear about Jesus in a way they can understand. The Club is named after Jesus words in John 7:37 which states “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink.” We hope that teenagers would come to Jesus when they are thirsty for more in their lives. So, on Friday evenings, teens jump on the CDC bus to see what adventure was planned for them that would point them toward Jesus. Some highlight events of the year were our city-wide scavenger hunts, our weekend service projects, and an honor picnic for our graduating seniors. Students also have opportunities for weekend retreats, service, and connection to resources such as college and career planning, mentoring, and life skills.

We have also used this program as an opportunity to develop student leaders who live out the way of Jesus in our schools and neighborhood. We average about 60 students in attendance weekly with 6-8 student leaders and 6-8 adult volunteers.

“You are like a big brother to me. Any time I need something, you are there. It is hard to find a person that never looks down on you and always has a smile on their face. Thank you for everything.” (Club participant)

Karate

Karate meets two times a week Monday and Thursday evening | Blessed Sacrament

The Breakthrough Karate School opened in January of 2011. It is available to any young person over the age of 8.

Karate has many benefits – it teaches self-defense; it is an opportunity to exercise; it provides socialization and most important, it develops character and discipline. These are all very beneficial to young people in our community. It is our hope and desire that local leadership is trained and raised up so that the school can exist for years to come.

Mr. Alan Brace, a 4th degree black belt Master Instructor of the World Tang Soo Association and owner of Grand Tradition Martial Arts in Livonia, Michigan is the instructor of Breakthrough Karate. We are grateful for his commitment and willingness to develop a school here for the benefit of our community. He brings along high level students to assist him in the programming.

The ongoing outcome of this endeavor is a group of young people who are trained in the art and discipline of karate which reaps a variety of benefits for the community.

Day: Mondays & Thursdays
Time: 7 – 8 pm
Location: Blessed Sacrament
Cost: $5 per class

Basketball

Bible and Basketball – While most of our programming is geared for children and teens, there are some adamant young men who wanted the opportunity to play basketball, so on Wednesday evenings, 25-30 young men, ages 18-25 come to the gym at Blessed Sacrament under the supervision of volunteers Nate, Tony and Ken. They are intense and everyone has a chance to play. We hope that these men will come to know Jesus (if they don’t already) and grow in their walk with Christ. God can speak through basketball.

Youth Overnight Camp

The Best week of your life!

Each summer, youth involved in CDC programs have the opportunity to go to overnight camp for a week with CDC staff and volunteers. Middle school youth have attended Kids Across America camp in Missouri, and high school youth attend Timber Wolf Lake Young Life camp in northern Michigan.

A week away from the city gives youth a chance to relax, connect with their leaders on a different level, have a good time, and ponder the great love of God exhibited through Jesus Christ! Out of their normal context, teens can gain valuable perspective of their lives and be able to process issues in the context of a relationship with a loving adult friend. Camp forges lifelong friendships, and transforms lives at a deep level. This is a highlight and foundation of our ministry.
