Higher Ground Climbs to New Heights

In April 2011, CDC launched Higher Ground Landscaping, LLC. It was a simple but ambitious plan: hire unemployed and hard to employ men from our community to cut lawns and get customers who would pay for their lawn to be cut. Eight employees later, including our fantastic crew supervisor Craig, we have 132 customers that we cut lawns for and are within a few hundred dollars a month from break even. More important, though, are the changes we are seeing in the employees. These men have grown from lawn cutters to landscapers. They have grown from men without hope of employment to men with promise who want to work even more than what we can give them. In many we are seeing character growth too, and that is exciting. It started with 2 men last summer and it has grown into an eight man crew generating revenue and satisfying customers.
