CDC Children's Ministry...
Breakthrough Enrichment Program
Each week, nearly 100 students attend the Breakthrough Enrichment Program hosted by CDC and an incredible team of nearly 50 volunteers! On Mondays, Breakthrough is hosted by Mt. Olive Baptist Church, and on Tuesdays, Breakthrough meets at Metropolitan United Methodist Church, both on Woodward. Transportation is provided to and from the enrichment program.
During their time there, the children are first served dinner, then go through a three-part rotation of creative arts, academic enrichment, and Bible time. The goal for the creative arts component is to give children exposure to a range of arts including visual arts, drama, dance, and music that have been cut from the Detroit Public Schools curriculum. The goal of the academic room is to reinforce the skills learned in the classroom and to help children maintain grade-level progress. The goal of Bible class is to give students a foundational understanding of Scripture as well as an introduction to the good news of Jesus Christ. The mission of the Breakthrough Enrichment Program overall is to create a safe haven where youth are equipped and empowered as well-rounded people, thereby building their community. In all that, some weeks it's hard to tell who's learning more, the children or their teachers!
Please pray that God would be glorified in all the lessons taught at Breakthrough Enrichment, and that it would be a fertile ground for planting seeds for His Kingdom.
Please also pray that God would continue to send faithful volunteers to make Breakthrough Enrichment a success.

Summer Day Camp
"He likes to get out of the house and go play..." (Day Camp mom)
For five weeks each summer, CDC hosts day camp for children ages 6-13 in the central Detroit community. The first four days of the week, children spend time in Bible lessons, crafts, recreation, as well as focused lessons for the year's curriculum. Perhaps everyone's favorite day of the week is Friday, field trip day! For 2006, the theme is the science of creation, learning about water, sky, light, darkness, plants, animals, and humans! Past themes have included sports, reading enrichment, and creative arts. The goal with summer day camp is to provide quality programming that keeps children active physically, mentally, and spiritually all summer and their whole lives long! Integral partners for summer day camp include Tried Stone Baptist Church, Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Abyssinia Church, and Metropolitan United Methodist Church, which all serve as sites for camp, as well as church youth groups who come from as far as Chicago and Connecticut to help with Bible, craft, and recreation lessons.
Please pray that God would provide safe transportation for the children and the volunteers all summer long.
Please also pray that day camp would be life-giving for the children, and that life would reverberate throughout the community.

Overnight Camp
At the end of the summer, children involved in CDC day camp have the opportunity to go to overnight camp for a week with CDC staff and volunteers. Children get the opportunity to swim, play outside all day, and build teamwork! This year children will be attending the Joy of Jesus camp in Michigan. A week away from the city gives kids a time to let loose, and it is often a time of true breakthroughs!
Please pray that we would be able to raise enough funds through the Summer Dreams program of the Free Press to award scholarships to the children who would like to attend summer camp!

Sponsorship
CDC seeks to equip children in central Detroit by connecting them with sponsors. Sponsors are special volunteers who commit to attending three events each year to get to know the children, as well as provide financial support used for school uniforms and supplies. Many sponsors end up building long-term relationships with CDC kids. The sponsor events, such as the Christmas party and back-to-school rally, are some of the most exciting of the year for CDC!
Please pray for more sponsors to desire to build relationships and play a role in the lives of the children of central Detroit.
