The Challenge
For most in urban ministry, the idea of attending Bible College or seminary is virtually impossible. It is too expensive, offered far from home, and often does not relate to urban life or ministry. They cannot leave their jobs or their churches to give four years for ministry training while the needs and demands are so great.
Even if they could find a way to relocate, they would need to find a way to fund their education because it is so costly. Furthermore, many could not satisfy the academic requirements necessary for admission. Having given up on the idea for further training, these leaders do the best they can, often working a full-time job while pastoring a church or serving in leadership in the church.
The Urban Church deserves the best and that includes pastors and lay leaders who are equipped Biblically, theologically, and with the necessary know how to create programs that multiply followers of Christ and develop strong leaders.
Our Answer
The Urban Ministry Institute of Detroit provides seminary-level instruction through our 16 module curriculum with courses in Biblical Studies, Theology and Ethics, Christian Ministry and Urban Mission.
AFFORDABLE: Our course costs are about 10% of the cost of tuition at a traditional seminary or about $35-50 per course depending upon material costs.
URBAN: Every course is geared toward effective urban ministry focusing on the challenges and opportunities of serving Christ in the city. This of course makes learning very relevant.
FLEXIBLE: Students take our courses in the evenings and on weekends - times that are suitable for those who work throughout the day. And, while there are 16 modules to take and complete for a certificate, classes do not need to be taken in chronological order. Students may enroll at any time.
PRACTICAL: All classes are designed to equip students for urban ministry, and can be taken for credit towards our Certificate and Diploma programs.
Who are we?
The Urban Ministry Institute of Detroit is a satellite program of World Impact's Urbam Ministry Institute whose goal is to equip Christian leaders across the country for service in urban neighborhoods.
