Boys to Men
Boys to Men and Sister to Sister are CDC’s mentoring programs to young men and women at Hutchins/ McMichael Middle School and Durfee Middle School. Boys to Men has been a program at CDC since May 2006. The purpose of Boys to Men is to raise indigenous leaders within the community and help these young men overcome obstacles hindering them from success. As a part of the program, we’ve had guest speakers talk to the young men on topics such as responsibility, conflict resolution, healthy choices in music, history, and how to treat a young woman. We were also able to take the young men going on a college visit to expose them to educational opportunities. Last year, seventy-five students were enrolled in the program.
Sister to Sister
Sister to Sister is in its first year of existence at CDC. As we began to evaluate our role in young men’s lives, we saw the need to be a part of young women’s lives as well, and Sister to Sister began. Topics discussed at Sister to Sister included budgeting, ethics, hygiene, education, self-esteem, etiquette, and relationships. The classes are broken up by grade with a total of 100 young women in attendance. The purpose of Sister to Sister is to promote effective communication amongst young women and to instill pride and zeal so that they might give back to younger women.
