CDC Pride For Parents Christmas Store...
The Pride for Parents Christmas community store is an extension of CDC’s ministry in the Central Detroit to restore Christ’s hope and encourage long-term development in the community. CDC gathers donations of clothing, toys, school uniforms and supplies, household items, and food. We then sell these gifts to families in our community for 70—90% off the retail price. That’s a $20 gift for $2—$6! The proceeds go back into the development of the store to further meet the needs of the community. The store seeks to utilize the Christmas holiday to serve the Central Detroit area with affordable Christmas gifts and necessities. We hope to eventually develop the store beyond Christmas into a full community store as a resource for people with low incomes and possibly to provide job opportunities. The goal of the Christmas store is to provide resources that encourage economic sustainabilit by starting a new tradition built on dignity and empowerment, not dependency. In 2005, five major church partners, a family, and 150 volunteers helped us sponsor the store, at which 162 families shopped. In these families, nearly 700 children are represented!
Getting Involved
Getting involved in the Community Store is quite a change from Christmas Baskets to which many are accustomed. It's harder to give gifts without the personal touch of delivering them to the families, but we want to enable parents to provide for their children. Thank you for opening up your hearts to participating in this new program that seeks to build dignity not dependency. There are lots of ways to get involved. Consider one of the options we have here or work with us on new creative ideas! (Donation pick-ups will be announced later in the year; if you have a question about an item, e-mail Sarah.)
Resource Donation
Print out our list of resources that the Community Store needs and pick up the gifts on your next shopping trip. We will work with churches and businesses to coordinate picking up these items. Call Sarah Shuman @ 313-873-0064 or email: spavelko@detcdc.org
Cash Donation
We can use your cash donations to purchase items in bulk through an organization called Gifts In Kind. Feel free to check them out online at www.giftsinkind.org.

Holiday Party
You may be planning on having friends and family over to celebrate the season. Why not ask each invitee to bring along gifts that you could donate to the Community Store. It could be a theme party. For example at a, “Mattel Holiday Party,” each person could bring children’s toys.
Small Groups
Bible study groups, Sunday School classes, sports teams, youth groups, take on sponsoring food baskets or setting a goal to reach for collecting items needed.
