Summer Day Camp

A Summer of Fun and Friends
What happens when 175 Kindergarten to 5th graders are invited to spend 5 weeks with Central Detroit Christian over the summer?

In the summer of 2008, they were motivated to “dare to shine!” as they discover more about themselves and people of history who dared to shine in their lives… people like Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, Frederick Douglas, Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman, and Jackie Robinson… people who used their lives to make a difference. As the children learned about these individuals, they were inspired to figure out their own talents and use them for good.

Not only did the children learn about African Americans in history, they also had the opportunity to learn about Jesus and to hear what it means to truly trust Him with their lives, whether that means trusting in Him by walking on water, using His power, and understanding how God is the One true hero. We were grateful for 4 summer interns (Emilie, Zack, Karen, & Carrie from the Navigators), 5 volunteer groups (youth groups from Highland Park Baptist, Oakpointe, Village Bible, Harvest Baptist, and NorthRidge), as well as Liz Rhoad, Sagina Turnbull, and numerous adult volunteers from Oakpointe Church who worked behind-the-scenes to make this summer a worthwhile one for children in Central Detroit. Urban Arts, (which included dancing and singing led by Katie Beth Hostetter), sports, pottery, and conflict resolution were themes that the middle school students touched on this summer as well.

In 2009, we will again hold a five week day camp for children ages 6-13 in the central Detroit community. The theme will be sports camp, which will give the children the opportunity to explore new avenues for recreation and skill development.

The goal with summer day camp is to provide quality programming that keeps children active physically, mentally, and spiritually all summer and their whole lives long! Integral partners for summer day camp include Tried Stone Baptist Church and Metropolitan United Methodist Church, which all serve as sites for camp, as well as church youth groups who come to helpwith Bible, craft, and recreation.
